Despite the entirely accurate comments about the weakness of the Mongols in DBM generally, the list does have three significant attractions:
1) It is very controllable, so it does what you want
2) Because of this you always have important choices to make, so it's involving to play.
3) Mongols!
If playing this list, rather than the stronger armies of the 3 55 Khitan-Liao, 4 48 Yuan Chinese or indeed 4 14 Jurchen-Chin then I would assume that you want the one thing Mongols offer that few other armies do, four pip-swapping generals and no nasty foot troops - well hardly.
There are two such versions, one with a Khitan sub-general, one without.
With the Khitans
1 CinC Reg Cv(S) @30
3 Guard Reg Cv(S)@10
2 Reg Art(O)@8
7 Mongol Reg LH(S)@7
13EE, 125AP
Khitan Sub Reg Kn(F)@31
4 Khitan Reg Kn(F)@11
3 Reg Khitan Cv(O)@8
5 Reg Khitan LH(F)@4
13EE, 119AP
Sub Gen LH(S)@27
6 Auxilliary Reg LH(S)@7
6 Civilians driven ahead@1/2
7 EE, 72AP
Sub Gen LH(S)@27
4 Auxillary Irr LH(S)@7
4 Mongol Reg LH(S)@7
2 Civilians driven ahead@1/2
9EE, 84AP
On the minus side the army is tiny (42EE), lacks any terrain troops and the punchiest troops in the army (KnF) have a distinct glass jaw.
However, that isn't the way to be thinking! The army has the highest aggression rating and so will probably attack, it has the best
possible command structure (four regular commands) so can direct its pips. Lastly three commands are the same size for deployment
purposes, and two commands that are readily redeployable, and don't give much away anyway. Tactics are simple, if brutal.
Seek to gain a deployment advantage, you deploy the two LH/civilian commands first, attack with utter commitment from the off, ideally
getting some LH behind the enemy flank and getting three commands onto one, break that, then its neighbour and the job is done :)
Do not waste pips worrying about the enemy attack, if it becomes a general engagement then you're doomed anyway.
Don't fixate on the artillery, but they have a vital job, they are the only troops in the army that can dispose of elephants, war wagons
and quality bows. They also upset opponents who try to simply hunker down in terrain.
The same (or similar) without the Khitans
1 CinC Reg Cv(S)
4 Guard Reg Cv(S)@10
2 Reg Art(O)@8
6 Mongol Reg LH(S)@7
13EE, 128AP
Sub Gen Reg Cv(S)
4 Georgian Irr cv(S)
3 Armenian Irr Kn(F)
5 Mongol Reg LH(S)@7
13EE, 128AP
Sub Gen LH(S)@27
6 Auxilliary Reg LH(S)@7
6 Civilians driven ahead@1/2
7 EE, 72AP
Sub Gen LH(S)@27
4 Auxillary Irr LH(S)@7
2 Mongol Reg LH(S)@7
2 Civilians driven ahead@1/2
7EE, 70AP
The Armenian Kn(F) are included because they have a "quick kill" ability (being knights), on the minus side they themselves can die horribly quickly
with little provocation, and are impetuous troops as well. A beginner nervous of these could substitute 1 LH(S) and 2 Guard Cv(S) for a more
solid (it's all relative) alternative. Good luck, don't fear death and you'll have some good games.
(Huw P-Y) For another view of the Mongols try the following:
Command 1
CinC Reg Cv(S) - The Great Khan -
5 Reg Cv(S) - Guard Cavalry -
7 Reg LH(S) - Mongol Cavalry -
14 Els/13 EE
Command 2
Sub Reg LH(S) - Sub General -
6 Reg LH(S) - Mongol Cavalry -
8 Irr Hd(I) - Civilian Hostages -
15 Els/7 EE
Command 3
Sub Reg LH(S) - Sub General -
5 Reg LH(S) - Mongol Cavalry -
2 Reg Art(O) - Bolt Shooters -
8 Els/8 EE
Command 4
Khitan Sub Reg Kn(F) - Khitain Vassal Sub General -
4 Khitan Reg Kn(F) - Khitain Vassal Soldiers -
3 Khitan Reg Cv(O) - Khitain Vassal Foragers -
5 Khitan Reg LH(F) - Khitain Vassal Orderlies -
13 Els/13 EE
Still Tiny (but hey, that's Mongol for you) but can be massively fun to play and is capable of being surprisingly effective against an opponent who underestimates it.
This version is relient upon deploying the hostages (Hd command) first but with the general degradation of Hd(I) in v3.1 that hasn't become a bad thing, the rest of the notes from Jer above apply (and he should know, he's used them for long enough!). <Jer replies - Yes Huw, I am indeed very old, which may explain why my first draft army list had an error in the number of horde, now corrected.>
