My first army was Later Hungarian and its a great 1st army for many reasons.

  • Its flexible enough to structure the army in a number of ways to be a quite different beast each time.
  • three irreg generals with large Break points
  • 4 reg generals (or 3 and an ally) to give max manourverability with corresponding smaller break points.
  • very good heavy foot if you want to go that way ( 8 reg spO and 8 reg blade O with psiloi support)
  • very good Knight Options (irreg O, reg O, reg I wedge, reg S) fast are poor now anyway
  • filler with useful role as somthing other than filler (BwI adn LhF)
  • loads of handy light horse of every variety.
  • Allies that add to the army wallachian, moldavian and the cream of Serbia.
  • warwagons!
  • no steep kills so less terrain (which youdont like with so many points tied up in light horse
  • good morphability into other eastern European amries (lithuanian, serbian, teutonic etc...)
  • A few Psiloi S to hold hilly terrain if necessary.

The drawback is no auxillia but there are no steep hills in the list so not so bad with agg 2. Also with so much variety it can be difficult to get your list right to maxiimise break point and command role definition.

The Lithuanians, Teutonics and Serbians are also good armies but dont have the flexibility in army structure that staves off boredom for a first army.

Although its forgiving in a lot of ways it can go down very quickly until you get the hang of flankarama Dont be afraid to fight with your generals at least by mid game. Wedge Generals are tops so long as they dont have to turn.

I wouldnt exaclty say that small manouver armies are that great for beginners as you are likely to get out manouvered anyway but you can play this in many different ways.

In this way you can try out:

8 reg blade and 8 reg spear are very solid when their flanks are protected by war wagons. If they were any bigger it'd be harder to

avoid the things the hate (pike).

Additionally you can try out any variation between an all irregular generals to up to four reg night generals (120AP or so).

If you go early it starts to look more like a Cuman or Pecheneg army. If you sneak serbian ally into the list suddenly its got a

very solid strike command (when reliable).

Unless you are loaded with cash its handy if your first army is playable in a variety of ways. I played these guys almost exclusively for almost 2 years till I had finished my2nd army and was only getting bored of it in the last 6 months or so.

An Example Army List Plus Play Notes

Following is my favourite Later Hungarian list.. Early on I took too much BwI as filler and just saw too many commands behave like a fart in a storm in the face of enemy.

Notes:

You have two commands of equal Element numbers (edit Nik Gaukroger) so can select which of these to put down first. Pick a half of the table you like and mass on it with your serbs supported by the CinC.

The spear command is unlikely to be a game winner unless you can get it in front of impetuous knights or bow. the spear goes roughly in the middle of the table and the rest of the army anchors off it. You may be able to safely move forward with the spear leaving the warwagons beyhond 6 inches apart so nothing can sneak though. Any brazen light horse trying to run the gauntlet shoudl be faced with a Cuman in its face and a warwagon shooting it from the rear. NB remember warwagons shoot in any direction.

The micro command despite its few numbers can perform a number of roles depending on the terrain and enemy. They can simply add to the flank protection as the reast of the army moves up. The general should usually go and aid its neighbors (The CinCs kights and the Serbs). The two light horse can move forward to delay enemy mounted or simply sit in the middle of your stretched warwagon fortress daring mounted to come through.

In the spear command there are 5 psiloi who can either sit on difficult hills you are anchoring off or better still, act as rear support for the spear and the. Being entirely foot the general of the spear command can either sit along side it aiding the CinC and Serbs (does anyone detect a theme here?) or can dismount as a reg blade (S) with blade S rear support. NICE

So in short you are small enough to avoid a phalanx and tough enough to crack pretty much anything else except BwS - and thats where the warwagons come into their own.

Your stike should only occur in a time and manner of your choice and should consist of:

2 KnS generals

2 KnI wedge generals

4 KnS

one more wedge for luck

Weaknesses:

I usually lose if the Lh fast are fighting before anyone else is. It was too tempting to on table flank march iwth a 5 or six and get behind the enemy on bound one in 3.0. The restictions on marching in 3.1 make the list work better for me as I am less tempted to leave the rest of my army behind to the detriment of all. You dont have the army size for a light horse lottery so be careful.

Once you've committed the CinC things can go horrbily if he wins too much so dont commit him unless you really need an extra KnS general in the line and at least not before mid game.

Although this may not look like a viable option for this list there is a reasonable army there and it can be fun to use. The list I have used at several competitions is:

It is basically a pin and punch army. I have been successful when using all the knights together in a single block to hit one enemy command and then exploiting the gap created. The crusader ally command is ofen lost, so this works best under 3210 scoring system.
