DBM 3.1, Basic list options, 3rd Place at Celtic Championship 2007

List

c1: 1x Reg CvO Chariot CnC, 10x Irr Cv(I), 6x Irr LH(O), 12x Reg Sp(O), 1x Irr Ps(O), 2 x Reg Ps(O) - 24.5EE

c2: 1 x Reg Cv(S) SG, 4x Irr Cv(S), 5x Irr LH(O), 9x Irr Ax(O), 5 x Irr Ps(O) - 21.5EE

c3: 1 x Reg Cv(S) SG, 6x Irr Cv(O), 2 x Irr Cv(I) (DBE), 1 x Irr LH(O), 10x Irr Ax(O), 6 x Irr Ps(O) - 23EE

Notes

This list is based on a radical re-think of what LAP could do under DBM 3.1. The prognosis wasn't good as CvI and CvO had lost the ability to double rank to get +1 vs LH/Cv, plus those LH-rich armies that LAP could eat up in DBM v3.0 weren't around as much and flanks weren't as likely to be available so relying on mobility didn't seem like a good idea.

Notes

This list is based on 4 regular generals ("the crack cocaine of DBM, once you've started it's hard to stop" - someone on the dbmlist years ago) and a few toughish troops plus a lot of rubbish.  Basically you tried to use your mobility to make the game very complex for your opponent and then concentrate the limited strike troops in one point. Under 3.0 this was more viable as skirmishing was so effective you could afford to try and win the game on a very narrow frontage whilst skirmishing everywhere else. Despite the high finish of this list in Scotland, I went to Britcon with a similar list and basically got eaten alive by the higher standard of play. However I did learn some things about the army along the way...

It contains the following errors (IMO, in hindsight):

  • Command 4 is designed as a PIP sink and yet it has an El, one of the most PIP-intesive troop types. Motto "Your PIP sink cannot also be your PIP drain"
  • With so much mandatory poor quality troops, needing to take Hd to pad out the army is a warning sign of over-ambitious design - 4 reg generals plus all the chrome, hmmm.
  • This is a very Cv-heavy army and will almost always win the Cv/LH battle to out-skirmish the enemy. Why oh why is there more than the minimum number of LH then? These brittle troops aren't likely to do much in a situation where the enemy's LH has to hide due to your numbers of Cv..
  • The Sp(S) and Sp(O) never worked well together due to lack of mutual rear support and the general desire to fight 2 deep with them (list restrictions required both of them). Motto: When stiffening some troops with ones of a high class, don't do it if the troops fight in multiple ranks.
  • The "fighting frontage" of this list is very narrow, even for DBM v3.0 - 2 KnF, 3 CvS, 4 Sp, 1 El, 2 Cv(S) SG =12 elements wide (and 2-3 of them are generals, eek)

Good things in this list:

  • The Sp/CvI/Ps combination works well in a command as the CvI help the Sp get into action and the Sp protect the Cv against heavier troops.
  • Small groups of Reg HI can actually move pretty quicky as long as they can march and are cheap enough to be filler/reserve in some battles.
